Music District Auditions

All three kids have been working like mad to audition for Western Mass. District Band/Orchestra/Chorus. The auditions were last weekend and the McBrides did great!!
Aoife score placed her first chair french horn in the orchestra - Liam who did a double audition for voice and cello, got in for both but chose to play cello in orchestra - Brendan, with one of the top vocal scores, placed into the boys chorus!
The kids will start to work on the music in January and the concert will be in March - I can't wait!!

Brendan took a diving class this fall and it went really well. He was fearless and learned quite a bit. He will continue with the lessons in the spring with an eye towards a competitive team in the fall of 2013...

Third IEA - Nov. 10, 2012

Aoife and her Heritage Farm team competed in the their third IEA show of the season. Everyone rode really well. Aoife pinned first in cross rails and pinned first in flat class. Her team took second place for the day.
We have a bit of a break before the next show - Dec. 15. It will be nice and frigid for that one. Why oh why is it so darn cold in horse arenas???????

4H State Show

Aoife and Marley competed at the 4H State Horse Show September 8-9. There were 18 miniature horses competing at this show - a huge jump over last year's show. This is the fastest growing division in MA 4H.
Aoife and Mr. Marley had a wonderful show - taking Reserve Champion in Gymkhana and Reserve Champion in Performance. Most importantly - great fun was had by all!

IEA Show 1 and 2

The IEA season began September 23 with a show at Aoife's home barn, Heritage Farm. She is competing in two classes this year: Flat and Crossrails. This first show she pinned first in her flat class and first in crossrails. The Heritage Farm Middle School team placed first overall.
The second show was October 13 at a barn in New Hampshire. This show was a repeat of the first - Aoife pinned first in flat and first in crossrails. The team took first overall.
She and her team are off to a really strong start!

Liam's June 2012 Cello Recital

A small bit of catch up with this post. Liam had a cello recital in June to end his first year of lessons. He played Bach's Minuet in C. His cello instructor, Nicole, had about 15 young people play one piece each. Most were accompanied by Nicole on cello.
This is just a small snippet of Liam's performance.

First day of school! First day of school!

Everyone went back to school on September 4th. Aoife started 7th grade and Liam and Brendan started 6th grade at John F Kennedy Middle School. Big giant new school for L&B! The transition was made much easier by the fact that they have spent time in the school for other activities and big sister had quite a few question and answer sessions with the twins to help relieve concerns.

Quebec 2012 Part 2 - Tadoussac

We left Quebec City Weds. the 22 and traveled the 3 hours up and down some fairly significant mountiany bits to Tadoussac. This little town is located at the junction of the St. Lawrence Estuary and the Saguenay Fjord, in a beautiful bay. The unique junction of these 2 bodies of water stirs up huge amounts of little sea creatures and that, combined with a really deep trench that runs through the area, attracts an amazing variety of marine mammals. Which means - WHALES!

Now, we have whales here in Massachusetts - Humpbacks especially but in Tadoussac, they have those and more! Including the southernmost colony of belugas and for a few weeks in August/September - Blue Whales. 

All in all, we saw minkes, 3 fin whales swimming in a pod, a couple of humpbacks (Blizzard and Perseus), lots of harbour porpoise (usually in pairs), grey seals, a whole mess of belugas and several blue whales.

We took a couple of 12 person Zodiac trips and a couple of kayaking trips. Happily, the biggest whale seen by kayak was a minke which is pretty small!!
Highlights: several blue whales, one almost close enough to touch! - breaching minke (from the Zodiac, not kayak!) - on kayak, being surrounded, literally, by harbour porpoises and minkes surfacing. You could hear their breath sounds all around - beluga beach, a hike into a beach area where we saw about 50 belugas frolicking around and actually heard them whistle and click - Kayaking at midnight with a huge sky of stars. Every dip of the paddle stirred up bioluminescence so the water looked full of stars too. With the help of a hydrophone, we heard belugas and harbour porpoises singing underwater.

We didn't take very many photos during the Tadoussac portion of the trip. The boats and kayaks were bumpy and awkward (and often very splashy!) and our whale pictures never seem to capture the truly awesome experience of being with these creatures. I have to say, Aoife took all of these photos and she did much better than I usually do. I normally have a whole mess of ocean pictures where a whale just was......

Quebec 2012 - Quebec CIty

We are just back from an amazing holiday in Quebec, Canada. The first part of the trip was spent in Quebec City - a 7 hour drive from Northampton. We were there from Sunday Aug. 19 until Weds. Aug. 22. The campground was right outside the city and very convenient. They even had a litter of kittens, just hatched, in the campground office, much to Aoife's delight!
Quebec City is a beautiful city with a very Frenchlike feel. There is even an elevator between the lower and upper city - just like Paris.

Some of our trip highlights included a visit to the Citadelle de Quebec:
"The Citadel is the largest British fortress built in North America. A unique location, it is an active military garrison, some of whose walls enclose 300 years of military history in Quebec City spanning the French, British and Canadian periods. First occupied by British troops and the Canadian artillery, since 1920 it has been the official residence of the Royal 22e Régiment, the only Francophone infantry regiment in the CF Regular Force." (taken from the official Citadel website)

We attended the changing of the guards ceremony. The best part about this regiment is that it has an actual goat as its mascot. This is a pretty fancy goat......

We went to a great museum, ate crepes in a funny little cafe, saw some churches, had a great meal at a restaurant called Le Cafe du Monde (that 'le' is very important, no beignets here.....:-(, and visited a big giant waterfall.

The kids thought it was really funny that 'KFC' was 'PFK' in french but 'Subway' was still 'Subway'.....

5th Grade Play

At Leeds Elementary School, the leaving fifth grade class puts on a special play at the end of the school year. Liam and Brendan's class play was a fun informational musical about the American Revolution.

There are two fifth grade classes and each stood on risers on each side of the stage. This is a play constructed for large educational settings so there were no especially big parts - lots of little one or two line parts so everyone got a chance to speak.

 Brendan did a wonderful job and clearly had the best costume!!

Liam is the host of a Home Shopping Network Channel selling colonial artifacts - He was pretty funny. While on the risers, singing the different songs, Liam was incredibly goofy and animated. He was doing some groovy dance moves and singing out. I wish I could have gotten this on film - it was very liam and very funny.

Little League Regular Season Ends - Playoff time!

Liam and Brendan's little league team - Cooper's Corner - has won the regular season play this year. Now we head into double elimination playoffs....some of the other teams are really good so this should be a nailbiter of a series!

Track Season In Full Swing

Liam, Brendan and Aoife have begun the quick six week track season. Every Friday night at the high school oodles of kids, third grade to ninth grade, run relays, sprints, long jump, and high jump.
Our three are fast! Aoife and Brendan won their sprints this week and Brendan cleared 10'7" at the long jump.

Ok, yes YPC did win.....

YPC was the winner in the childern's catagory- this is the second year YPC has claimed that title - the first with all 3 McBrides. The season closed with the Hampshire Young Peoples Chorus singing one more concert. Aoife had a horse conflict but Liam and Brendan sang their hearts out.
Big changes afoot for next year's YPC - the kids will be in a smaller select group and will get to go to Chicago for a concert tour!

Vacation Week

This week is April Vacation week in Mass and what beautiful weather we have had! Like summer really and I wish I had thought to open the pool....but this has been an especially weird winter/spring so who knew??

Liam and Brendan had baseball camp afternoons this week. Lots of fun getting ready for the start of the little league season May 1st. The coach was former Detroit Tiger - Mike Laga and signed gloves and cards for all the boys at the end of camp. Huge hit with L&B!

Aoife started the week competing at the 4H State Horse Judging competition. She was on the junior team from Hampshire County and they placed 3rd. Well done!

The rest of the week has been spent at Pocketful of Ponies farm working with Marley and the big ponies.

Alan has been home all week doing "honey-dos" - beautiful counter in the laundry room, well tilled vegetable garden with fresh, fabulous compost, happy grass - seeded and limed, new pool outlet, as well as all of the other fabulous things he normally does!!:)

Sunday the 22 all three kids will be competing with the Hampshire Young People's Chorus in the semifinals of the Together in Song program on our PBS station. This program will be available on line and I will put the link up as soon as it is available.





IEA Season Ends

Aoife's IEA season ended at the New England Zones final at Mt Holyoke College on April 1st. She rode really well and made it into the final round. The top 4 riders in the final go onto Nationals and she placed a heartbreaking 5th place. Ack! It was a great ride though and her trainer was pleased with her. Next year, Aoife will move up a level and ride both flat classes and jumping classes. She can't wait!

Busy Weekend!

Friday March 30 - Liam and Brendan presented their science fair projects at school. Brendan's project was an overview of human origins and Liam's was sound waves in music.
Saturday - Liam and Brendan are singing with YPC at the "Big Sing" choir event in Springfield, MA. 7 or so children's choirs from the area are performing together.
Sunday - Liam, Brendan and I will sing the Palm Sunday service then I go to join Aoife and her trainer, Alli at the IEA New England Zones competition.

YPC on Television

Liam is not on the video because he had a swim meet that day. Brendan's arm was still in a cast so he got to sing instead of swim.
